How local businesses get recommended by AI: the 2026 evidence

Ask ChatGPT or Google's AI Mode for a good barber, dentist or laser clinic nearby and it names two or three businesses, not a list of ten. Which ones it names depends on what it reads: your Google profile, your reviews, your website and the guides that rank for your sector. Here is what the 2026 evidence says about each, strongest first, and what it says doesn't work.

AI search changes fast — what these engines cite can shift within days to weeks, not months. This page reflects research current as of October 2026 and is reviewed quarterly. Every statistic below is dated to its source so you can judge how current it is.

Key takeaways

  • No action has a controlled test showing it causes a lasting gain in local AI recommendations. The evidence is correlational: it shows where AI looks, not what will work for you.
  • Google Business Profile listings were 28.5% of all citations in local AI answers. ChatGPT barely used them and leaned on Yelp instead (US, UK and Australia).
  • Businesses Google's AI Mode named had a median of 4.9 stars and 226 Google reviews (US and Canadian home services).
  • Business websites made up 42% of local AI citations: say what you do, where, for what price and when, in plain text.
  • In the first Dutch data, 8 of 24 hairdressers and 23 of 33 dentists ranking in Google's top 10 were cited by at least one AI platform; Treatwell was cited by all six platforms checked.
  • Controlled tests found no lift from schema markup or an llms.txt file.

AI names fewer local businesses than Maps does

A Google Maps search shows a long list. An AI answer names a few, and often different ones on the next try. That makes the sources AI reads matter more, not less.

32–38%

Of local searches in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews named a given tracked business, against 66% on Google Maps. AI names fewer businesses, and repeat searches overlapped only 20–33%.

28.5%

Of all citations in local AI answers were Google Business Profile listings, the largest single source. ChatGPT was the exception: it leaned on Yelp.

Where local AI answers get their information

Google AI Mode and AI Overviews

Google's own Business Profile listings are the most cited single source, followed by business websites: in one study 92.5% of AI Mode answers to home-services questions cited at least one business's own site. Yelp and TripAdvisor appear too, far less often.

ChatGPT

In the US, UK and Australia, Yelp appeared as a source in 80% of ChatGPT's local answers, and Google Business Profile was not a top source. ChatGPT's search also draws on outside providers that return Google Maps listings, so your Google profile can still reach it. Which source ChatGPT uses for Dutch businesses has not been published; we found no study.

Sector guides and booking platforms

Guides that rank in Google get cited by nearly every AI platform. In Zuid-Holland, Treatwell (beauty) was cited by all six platforms checked and Zorgkaart Nederland (care) by five, while half of the local businesses ranking next to them were cited by none.

What the evidence supports, strongest first

No study has run a controlled test of any of these on live AI answers. The ranking below is by how consistent and how large the evidence is, and each item says how strong that is.

1

Keep your Google Business Profile accurate

Evidence: Most cited source · no controlled test

Name, primary category, opening hours, address, phone number and booking link. Google's AI cites this listing more than any other source, so if the hours or phone number there are wrong, that is what it has to work with. No study has tested whether editing a profile changes AI answers, so treat this as getting the facts right where AI reads them, not as a ranking trick.

2

Earn genuine reviews steadily, and answer them

Evidence: Strong correlation · one lab test

The businesses Google's AI Mode names have a median 4.9 stars and 226 reviews. Bigger, longer-running businesses may simply collect more reviews, so this is not proof that reviews cause the pick. In a lab test with three AI models, a famous brand's guaranteed recommendation disappeared once a rival rated less than 0.1 stars higher. Ask every customer, keep it steady, and never buy, filter or reward reviews: that breaks Google's review rules.

3

Say it plainly on your own website

Evidence: Large citation share · no controlled test

Business websites are 42% of local AI citations. Each service, the area you serve, prices or price ranges, opening hours and how to book belong in the page text, not only in images or a booking widget, so an AI that reads your site finds the answer to the question it was asked.

4

Be listed, accurately, on the guides AI cites in your sector

Evidence: Small Dutch study · directional

For salons and barbers that means Treatwell, and for clinics Zorgkaart Nederland. These guides already rank in Google and are cited by nearly every AI platform. Check which guides appear when you search your own service and city, and make sure your listing there is complete and matches your Google profile.

What the tests found does nothing

  • Schema markup as an AI lever: a matched study of 1,885 pages against 4,000 controls found no citation gain on ChatGPT, AI Mode or AI Overviews.
  • An llms.txt file: 240 matched pairs of sites showed no difference in how often they were cited (11.8% vs 11.6%).
  • Google profile posts, extra photos and extra categories as AI levers: we found no study that isolates them. Keep the profile tidy, but don't expect posts to get you recommended.

Check it the way AI behaves

Local AI answers change from one search to the next, so one test proves little. Ask the same question several times, from your own area, and look at each AI separately: Google's AI and ChatGPT read different sources. Expect a change to show up within days to weeks, not on the next search. How to measure AI visibility covers the method.

About the evidence: the large studies come from companies that sell local marketing tools, and most of their data is from the US, UK, Canada and Australia. The Dutch figures come from a single sponsored measurement with small groups per sector. Read them as where AI looks today, not as guarantees.
