Backlinks vs brand mentions: what moves AI visibility (2026 evidence)

“Build backlinks” is still the most common advice for getting into AI answers. The studies published since 2025 say something more specific: links correlate with AI visibility, but being mentioned on the right sites correlates more strongly, and it doesn’t seem to matter whether the mention carries a followed link. Here is what each study found, what Google’s policies now say, and what we see when we measure our own brand.

AI search changes fast — what these engines cite can shift within days to weeks, not months. This page reflects research current as of October 2026 and is reviewed quarterly. Every statistic below is dated to its source so you can judge how current it is.

Key takeaways

  • Links still correlate with AI visibility, but moderately: 0.39–0.42 for ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini in one travel study, and only 0.22 for raw backlink counts on Google AI Overviews.
  • Being mentioned correlates more strongly than being linked: branded web mentions scored 0.66–0.71 across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews in Ahrefs' 75,000-brand study.
  • Nofollow links correlate with AI mentions as strongly as followed links (0.509 vs 0.504), so the useful thing is being referenced on the right sites, not passing link equity.
  • Buying links, or requiring a link in a contract, is link spam under Google's policies, which now also name attempts to manipulate generative AI responses.
  • The practical move: find the pages AI already cites for your buyer questions ("best of" lists, review platforms, editorial) and earn a place on them. Measure before and after.

The short answer

Links are not dead, but they are a weak proxy. What tracks AI visibility most closely is how often, and where, a brand is talked about.

What six studies found

Each figure is a correlation between a site’s metric and how often AI answers name or cite it. They come from different samples and methods, so compare the direction, not the exact numbers.

Ahrefs, AI Overviews

75,000 brands, May 2025

Branded web mentions 0.664, branded anchors 0.527, branded search volume 0.392, Domain Rating 0.326, referring domains 0.295, backlinks 0.218.

Ahrefs, ChatGPT + AI Mode + AI Overviews

75,000 brands, Dec 2025

Branded web mentions 0.66–0.71 on all three; Domain Rating 0.27–0.33; YouTube mentions ~0.737, the strongest factor. Ahrefs calls the link metrics "very weak".

SALT.agency

5,825 travel URLs, Dec 2025

Link metrics correlate moderately with ChatGPT (0.39), Perplexity (0.42) and Gemini (0.41), and weakly with Google AI Overviews (0.25).

Semrush

1,000 domains, five AI platforms, Oct 2025

Authority Score correlates 0.57 with AI mentions. Nofollow (0.509) and followed links (0.504) correlate the same.

SE Ranking

129,000 domains, ChatGPT, Nov 2025

Referring domains were the strongest single predictor; citations nearly double above 32,000 referring domains. Domains on several review platforms got 4.6–6.3 citations vs 1.8 for those on none.

Whitespark (expert survey)

47 local search experts, Nov 2025

For AI search, the top-ranked factor is being on expert-curated "best of" lists. Link quality ranks #29 for AI search, against #3 for classic local organic results.

Why the nofollow result matters

Classic link building is about passing ranking value, which a nofollow link is designed not to do. Yet in Semrush’s 1,000-domain study, nofollow links correlated with AI mentions as strongly as followed ones. Semrush’s reading is that AI models treat both link types the same way. Ours is that the link is mostly a marker of something else: the brand being referenced on a page that matters. That fits the Ahrefs result, where unlinked mentions beat every link metric, and the Whitespark experts, who rank “best of” lists first for AI search.

All of this is correlation. Big, well-known brands have more links and more mentions and more AI visibility, and none of these studies separates cause from effect.

What Google calls spam

Google’s spam policies define link spam as links made mainly to manipulate rankings. The examples include buying or selling links and requiring a link as part of a terms of service or contract. The same page now lists “attempting to manipulate generative AI responses in Google Search” as spam. Paid link packages, link exchanges and placements bought to steer AI answers sit inside those definitions.

What we see in our own measurement

On 16 October 2026 we asked three unbranded questions agencies ask about our own category (“What are the best AI visibility tools for marketing agencies?” and two others) on ChatGPT and Perplexity, three times each, and in the ChatGPT and Gemini apps. Of 24 answers, none named S6S. The pages the engines cited most were “best AI visibility tools” lists, and 5 of the 10 most-cited sites belong to companies that sell marketing or AI visibility software themselves (Semrush, Profound, HubSpot, Otterly and Cognizo). That is where the authority for these questions lives, and it’s where we are working on getting mentioned. It is one run, a baseline rather than a trend; we will publish the next measurements, including if nothing changes.

What to do instead of buying links

1

Find the pages AI already cites for your buyer questions

Ask the questions your buyers ask, without your brand name in them, and list the pages each engine cites. Those pages are the shortlist. A link from anywhere else may help classic search; it's a guess for AI answers.

2

Earn a place on them

"Best of" lists, review platforms, comparison articles, local press and industry associations. Give the editor a reason to include you: real data, a clear category, a product or service they can check. Mentions count even without a link.

3

Get onto the review platforms buyers use

In the SE Ranking data, domains listed on several review platforms were cited about three times as often as those on none. For software that means G2, Capterra or Trustpilot; for a local business, the booking and review sites in its market.

4

Keep what's written about you accurate

When the pages AI cites describe you wrongly, the answer repeats it. Correcting a cited page can matter more than adding a new one.

5

Measure before and after, per question

Record which engines name you for which questions before the work, and re-check the same questions after. Include questions you didn't target, so you can tell your work apart from normal variation.

What to skip

  • Paid link packages and link exchanges: link spam under Google's policies, and the studies give no reason to think AI answers reward them.
  • Judging a site by its backlink count alone: the strongest AI correlates are mentions and presence on the pages already cited.
  • Placing content to steer AI answers: Google's spam policies now name manipulating generative AI responses.
