Does social media help AI visibility? Every channel ranked (2026)

Does posting on LinkedIn, Instagram or X get your brand into ChatGPT’s answers? It depends on which AI you mean. Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode cite social content often; ChatGPT and Perplexity almost never do. Below, every channel is ranked by the strength of the evidence, separately for B2B companies and for local businesses, with what the evidence can’t tell you yet.

Published October 16, 2026 Last updated October 16, 2026Data current as of October 2026

AI search changes fast — what these engines cite can shift within days to weeks, not months. This page reflects research current as of October 2026 and is reviewed quarterly. Every statistic below is dated to its source so you can judge how current it is.

Key takeaways

  • Social content is cited mostly by Google's AI: 27.8% of AI Overview citations and 23% of AI Mode citations point to user-generated platforms, against 0.2% on ChatGPT and 2.9% on Perplexity.
  • Posts can be picked up fast where nothing else exists: 8 of 10 AI search platforms cited a made-up concept posted on public sites within seven days. For contested "best X" questions there is no controlled test.
  • For B2B, YouTube and LinkedIn have the best evidence: YouTube mentions are the strongest single correlate of AI visibility, and LinkedIn appears in 14.3% of ChatGPT Search answers.
  • Sources switch fast: ChatGPT's Reddit share fell from 8.0% to 2.9% of its citations in two weeks in August 2026, and Grok cut, restored and cut again its X sourcing between May and August.
  • For local businesses, your Google profile, website and booking listings carry the citations. Posting cadence has no measured effect; experts rank it around #92 of the factors for AI search.

It depends which AI

A September 2026 study of 164,629 URLs cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode found user-generated content all over Google’s AI answers and almost nowhere in ChatGPT’s.

27.8%

Of Google AI Overview citations point to user-generated platforms: social, video, forums.

Ranking for B2B companies

For questions like “best [category] tool”. Ranked by how strong the evidence is, then by the size of the effect.

  1. 1

Mentions on the sites AI already cites

    Every engine · Strongest

Not a social channel, but it competes for the same effort. Branded web mentions correlate 0.66–0.71 with visibility in ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews.

  2. 2

    YouTube

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode above all; Gemini · Strong correlation, volatile

YouTube mentions are the strongest single correlate of AI visibility (~0.737), and YouTube is the most-cited site in Google AI Overviews. But cited videos lose roughly 43% of their citations within a month, and the sources disagree on Perplexity: one reports it stopped citing YouTube almost entirely around 12 August 2026, while Ahrefs' September list still ranks YouTube #2 there.

  3. 3

    LinkedIn posts and articles

ChatGPT Search and Google AI Mode · Moderate, rising

Cited in 14.3% of ChatGPT Search answers and 13.5% of AI Mode answers (5.3% on Perplexity). Posts with specific technical detail were 77% more likely to be cited by ChatGPT; reactions made almost no difference. LinkedIn's share of social citations rose from about 8% to about a fifth between May and August 2026.

  4. 4

    Reddit (real participation only)

Perplexity, Gemini and Google's AI; unstable on ChatGPT · Large but unstable

A large source, and the most volatile: ChatGPT's Reddit share fell from 8.0% to 2.9% of its citations in two weeks in August 2026. Seeding threads to steer answers is the kind of thing Google's spam policies now name.

  5. 5

    Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Quora

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode only · Real on Google, little elsewhere

Ahrefs' per-engine lists include these platforms among the most-cited sites only for Google's AI. As a group, social and video platforms (YouTube included) are 22.8% of AI Overview citations and 18.3% of AI Mode citations, against 0.1% on ChatGPT and 1.5% on Perplexity.

  6. 6

    X (Twitter)

Grok · Not a lever outside Grok

X is not among the 50 most-cited sites for ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot or Google's AI. Grok itself cut, restored and cut its X sourcing again between May and August 2026.

  7. 7

    Podcasts

    Unknown · No evidence

We found no citation data for podcasts.

Ranking for local businesses

For questions like “best barber near me”. Here the profiles and listings carry the citations, not the posts.

  1. 1

    Google Business Profile

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode above all · Strongest

28.6% of nearly 2 million citations in AI answers about local businesses.

  2. 2

    Your own website

    Every engine · Strong

About 93% of the domains cited in local AI answers were the businesses' own websites.

  3. 3

    Booking and review platforms

Perplexity above all; ChatGPT · Strong (US); first signal (NL)

Yelp appeared in 80% of ChatGPT's local answers in the US. In our own Dutch measurements of a barbershop and a laser clinic, the booking platform Treatwell appeared in 17 of 32 answers: 11 of 12 on Perplexity, but only 4 of 12 on ChatGPT search.

  4. 4

    Facebook and Instagram profiles

    Mostly Google's AI · Weak

2.2% and 1.9% of local citations, cited as profile pages. Keep the facts on them accurate; no study shows that posting more moves AI answers.

  5. 5

    Reddit, YouTube, TikTok

    Rarely · Very weak

    1.8%, 0.4% and 0.1% of local citations.

  6. 6

    Posting schedules and engagement

    None measured · No evidence

No study or experiment shows an effect. In Whitespark's survey of 47 experts, recency of social posts ranks #92 and engagement #102 of the factors for AI search.

What the evidence can’t tell you yet

Almost all of it is citation counts and correlation. The one controlled experiment we found posted a made-up concept on public sites: 8 of 10 AI search platforms cited it within seven days. That shows how fast posts can be picked up when nothing else exists on a topic. It doesn’t show what a post does for a real brand competing for “best X” against many other sources. The case studies that claim a lift for real brands have no control group.

The sources also move. In 2026 alone, ChatGPT dropped most of its Reddit citations in two weeks, Grok cut, restored and cut again its X sourcing, and the trackers disagree on whether Perplexity still cites YouTube. A ranking like this one needs re-checking every month, which is why this page carries its date.

What to do

  • B2B: put the effort into being mentioned on the pages AI already cites for your buyers' questions, then YouTube videos that explain your category, then LinkedIn posts with real technical detail.
  • Local: complete your Google profile, keep your website and booking listings accurate and consistent, and collect reviews. Keep social profiles accurate; skip the posting schedule as an AI tactic.
  • Measure per engine: a channel that helps on Google's AI may do nothing on ChatGPT.
  • Test with target and control questions: re-check the questions you aimed at and some you didn't, so you can tell a real effect from normal variation.
